In an interview with Inside Higher Ed, Shiloh Theberge discussed the Trump administration’s proposed regulations that could revoke the federal tax-exempt status of private nonprofit colleges that engage in racial discrimination, including admissions policies, scholarships, or other programs intended to support minority students.
Shiloh noted that historically Black colleges and universities, tribal colleges, and minority-serving institutions are likely to be most affected, as those institutions have “more programs, more donors and more financial assistance that are based on race.” She added: “I would imagine that if a large portion of their donors would like to earmark the funds to be used for students of a certain race or races, then this is going to be more difficult for them.”
