'Tis the Season—To Avoid Getting Sued'

Lisa McGlynn’s article “'Tis the Season—To Avoid Getting Sued'” was featured in the Daily Business Review on December 15, 2014.

'Tis the season! Employers across South Florida are gearing up for their annual holiday parties. These events are traditionally a great way to unwind and to thank employees for their hard work throughout the year.

In the article, Lisa provides employers with a few good practices for creating a problem free company party.

  1. Do not serve alcohol.
  2. Host a catered lunch at your office during your normal hours.
  3. Use a ticket system to limit the number of drinks employees are given, or offer a cash bar.
  4. Offer a variety of appetizers with cocktails followed by a full dinner to ensure that guests have something to fill up on other than alcohol.
  5.  Hire a professional bartender to keep track of the alcohol consumption.
  6. Avoid calling your party a Christmas party or gearing your decorations toward a particular religion.
  7. Arrange for free taxi rides home for employees who feel they should not drive.
