Some States Watching California for Input on Independent Contractors

The California assembly passed AB 5 which seeks to make it harder to classify workers as independent contractors, building on the state’s Supreme Court decision in Dynamex that made a similar ruling. Other states like Pennsylvania are watching how California rules on independent contractors. Rick Grimaldi spoke with The Philadelphia Inquirer on the complexities of employing workers in the gig economy. “You’ve got a situation where gig economy businesses have created a disruption and nobody’s caught up yet,” he said. While the bill shouldn’t be a problem for traditional businesses, it will impact on-demand employers who are navigating the complexities of their workforce.
