Seattle Attorneys Review Washington’s New Noncompete Bill

In their bylined article for the Vancouver Business Journal titled “Noncompete bill presents new challenges for employers,” Catharine Morisset and Gulsah Senol discuss Washington’s new law that significantly restricts noncompetition agreements with both employees and independent contractors. Gov. Jay Inslee signed the bill into effect on May 8. According to Catharine and Gulsah, the law includes provisions against moonlighting and no-poach agreements and creates a new cause of action against employers who seek to enforce agreements that violate the new law. They explain that Washington employers who rely on noncompetition agreements to protect their companies must satisfy the new stringent conditions – or face a lawsuit from covered workers.
