Head of Higher Ed Practice Group Comments on Why Schools Pay Millions in Sexual-Harassment Settlements

In the Wall Street Journal article “Schools Pay Millions in Sexual-Harassment Settlements,” Scott Schneider comments on the public university system’s process of handling sexual harassment claims. In the past two years, universities have paid out more than $10.5 million in settlements. Most of the settlements involved people who claimed the universities did not properly respond to their accusations or did not give appropriate punishments for the violations. Other settlements that were reviewed seemed designed for faculty members and administrators to make quiet exits after an accusation of misconduct.
Scott summed up the process by saying, “All the economic calculus points to, ‘Let’s just get this case settled. Let’s get it resolved and move on.’”
