Atlanta Business Chronicle quoted Kim Thompson in its October 2 article “Government Shutdown Knocks E-Verify Off Line.” The article covered how the government shutdown had impacted the federal E-Verify system that employers use to verify employees can work legally. The article reported that since the shutdown, employers logging onto the E-Verify website have received an “error” in answer to their inquiries, leaving them wondering what to do. “It’s a question we’ve gotten a lot,” said Kim. “Employers are going to have to wait until the system is up and running again.” Kim added that companies should not be afraid to continue hiring employees as employers will be given a chance to explain when they make E-Verify queries that the delay in submitting the information was due to the shutdown.
