With the high rate of American workers testing positive for drug use, it is increasingly important for employers to review their drug-testing and substance abuse policies. In the article, "Failed Workplace Drug Tests Reach 12-Year High," featured in SHRM, Partner Howard Mavity advises employers on factors to consider when updating their policies.
Employers also need to consider applicable state laws when developing their policies and practices, said Howard. He added that policies should be updated to address recent trends in substance abuse. For example, the rise in prescription drug abuse and its effect on workers should be discussed.
"This is a societal issue, but it's also a workplace issue," Howard noted. "Employers have a big role to play in this."
