The extreme cold brought on by the Polar Vortex that covered much of the United States in January 2019 led to reports of deaths and injuries. So how do companies who operate outdoors ensure their employees are safe and their practices are in compliance with OSHA standards? Charlotte partner Travis Vance addressed this question in an interview with Bloomberg Law. He said, “While no specific standard addresses the cold, OSHA can cite employers under the general duty clause.” Travis advises employers to provide gloves, hats, and clothing sufficient for the temperatures expected, and to train staff to look for physical signs of overexposure to cold.
