Howard Mavity and Kevin Troutman presented a webinar entitled, "Ebola and the Workplace: Practical Guidance for Employers" on October 23, 2014.
Ebola is a rising concern among both employers and employees. And while public health knowledge is increasing with each new report, there are few black and white answers to many employment questions. Employers must responsibly weigh safety and legal risks and apply public health guidance in the framework of the ADA, OSHA standards and common law privacy concerns. Your employees may already be asking questions or expressing concerns about Ebola and how it could impact the workplace. Many people in the U.S. are from affected countries and travel may occur for business or pleasure reasons. It is important not to panic, but it is also important to be prepared to deal with questions, concerns and perceived problems.
Attorneys who focus their practices on workplace safety and health will present a one-hour webinar designed to help employers face these issues and deal with them in a thoughtful manner. Howard Mavity and Kevin Troutman addressed questions such as:
- Where should employers seek guidance?
- When should an employer require employees returning from West Africa to stay home or take other actions?
- How much information should be shared with employees?
- How do you deal with vendors or contractor personnel who visit your property if they have been in the region where Ebola is spreading rapidly?
- What do you do if an employee does not want to fly for business or perform certain duties, citing a concern about being exposed to Ebola?
- How do you respond to employees who are contacted by the CDC or may have flown with or been near infected people?
- Are there similar issues presented by Ebola to those addressed in employer Pandemic and Business Disruption plans?
- What are the unique concerns for employers in the healthcare and education settings?
