The article, “Council Approves Budget,” featured on The Sealy News, reported on Sealy's city council recent approval of its 2016-17 fiscal budget that includes a tax rate increase of eight percent for homes in the city limits.
Kevin Troutman provided insight on the new Fair Labor Laws and discussed which city employees the laws will affect.
“Recently through executive order and the law making process, a few of the Fair Labor Laws changed. Employees are entitled to overtime pay and a minimum wage. The default under the law is that employees are entitled to overtime when they work over 40 hours in a week and to a minimum wage but exemptions are available,” Kevin said.
Kevin explained there are two tests that employees must pass to be exempt that includes a duties test and a salary test.
Three city employees will be reclassified from exempt to nonexempt. Kevin explained that the law has changed and while employees that make a minimum $455 a week now must make a minimum of $913 a week to be exempt.
