In interviews with Bloomberg Law and Nation's Restaurant News, Alden Parker explains what employers need to know about California bill SB 93 that prioritizes laid-off hospitality workers for rehiring as businesses recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. If signed by Governor Newsom, the bill would require managers to notify laid-off employees at hotels, private clubs, event centers, airport hospitality establishments, and other hospitality operations when their jobs reopen, and offer those positions based on a preference system. Alden says hotel managers and other hospitality employers will likely struggle to comply with the bill’s requirements. The measure is silent on how many times employers must offer the position to a laid-off employee, he explains. An employer may need to make several attempts at contacting the employee before finding a new worker, adding to a business’s administrative burdens.
