Potent POTUS: What Employers Should Know About Obama’s Executive Orders on Immigration
On November 20, 2014, President Obama issued a number of executive orders designed to revise certain U.S. immigration policies. In addition to creating a new deferred action program for an estimated 5 million undocumented parents of U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents, who would be eligible to apply for work authorization permits, the new policies would, in the President’s words, “make it easier and faster for high-skilled immigrants, graduates, and entrepreneurs to stay and contribute to our economy.” To that end, the executive actions would, among other things, make it easier for highly-skilled workers (those holding H1-B visas) to change jobs, allow spouses of highly-skilled workers to obtain employment, and clarify the standards applicable to the L-1 visa program, which allows multi-national companies to transfer employees who are managers, executives, or have “specialized knowledge.” Join us at our next Breakfast Briefing to learn the ins and outs of Obama’s proposed executive actions and how they may affect your company.
