Attorney Comments on “Onionhead” Litigation

Next year a jury will determine if employees of the United Health Programs of America were discriminated against for “Onionhead.” Onionhead is a program that was designed to improve the corporate culture, but it was ruled that it could be considered a religion. Several employees claim they were fired for opposing Onionhead beliefs. In the SHRM article, “’Onionhead’ Litigation Heads Toward Jury Trial”, Melissa Ospioff explained the court ruled that Onionhead is arguably a religion due to the references to God and spirituality and the requirement that employees had to pray in the workplace.
