In an interview with SHRM, Emily Harbison provided practical guidance on the growing complexity of overlapping paid sick leave laws, noting that at least 21 states and more than two dozen municipalities now have paid sick leave or PTO mandates in effect. She cautioned that employers often misunderstand the scope of sick leave usage, noting that "given the term 'sick leave,' some employers think that employees can only use the leave when the employee is sick."
