An investigation or inspection by the government can be a very frightening and uncomfortable experience. Being prepared for an audit and maintaining control during the process are important to minimizing the associated fear and stress.

Faced with the threat of a government investigation, audit or inspection, hospitality employers should take a proactive approach to ensure they are prepared to respond. Employers must eliminate any fear of asserting legal rights, if necessary, to protect their interests and recognize the fact that the government could show up at their doors without advance notice. A proactive approach includes preparation of a pre-inspection action plan as well as understanding your rights against unreasonable government actions.

A proactive approach to government audits, including the preparation and implementation of a pre-inspection action plan, will significantly decrease the likelihood of a government investigation or inspection, large penalties and criminal sanctions.
