AB 304: Changes To The New Paid Sick Leave Law That You Should Know About

On July 1, 2015, mandatory paid sick leave becomes a reality in California as employers scramble to prepare for the new law. However, employers have discovered that the current law is not a model of clarity. Some details were not thoroughly accounted for, leaving it up to employers to interpret the new requirements with little to no certainty.
Thankfully, the California legislature has acknowledged these ambiguities. In the current session, the Assembly has considered and passed an emergency revision to the new Paid Sick Leave law, known as AB 304. The law proposes five primary changes, which gives employers much needed clarity, and in some cases, makes the law less onerous than before.
The new law was passed by the Assembly on June 22, 2015 and at the time of the writing of this article, was being considered by the Senate.
