Shanon Stevenson was quoted in The Wall Street Journal’s article “The Morning Risk Report: Immigration Raids Put Companies on Alert.” The raids by U.S. federal immigration agents targeting undocumented workers at 7-Eleven stores across the U.S. occurred the same day that the government announced a new worksite enforcement policy.
The emphasis on enforcement can expose employers to fines or even criminal charges for failing to have proper documentation—known as an I-9 form—that proves each employee is legally entitled to work in the U.S., said Shanon. “We’re seeing an increase in the number of audits of employers, and this new announcement of policy makes it more important for employers to make sure they are complying with I-9,” she added.
