Fisher Phillips Attorney Comments on Parent-Teacher Social Media Interaction

News

8.08.18

With a new school year beginning, some parents are considering whether they should connect with their children’s teachers via social media platforms. In the recent 11Alive News story, “Should You Friend your Child’s Teacher on Facebook?”, Atlanta partner Matt Simpson offered his thoughts on the potentially risky situation.

Matt pointed out the potential downside to parents interacting with teachers over social media platforms:

  1. It introduces a new dynamic to the relationship
  2. You could see posts with personal opinions about politics or religion and might not agree
  3. You might not approve of some of their extracurricular activities

He also brought up that teachers need to be cautious about posting photos or information which could compromise or violate a student’s privacy or harm the reputation of their school.
