Experts Offer Do's and Don'ts of Employment Verification
Bruce Larson of the Irvine office was quoted in the June 1 Employee Benefit News article "Experts Offer Do's and Don'ts of Employment Verification." The article noted that a popular restaurant chain fired hundreds of illegal workers following an audit by officials of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. This illustrates the importance of properly verifying that workers can legally work in the United States. The article also noted that even though only the federal government can regulate immigration, some states, like Arizona, have passed more stringent immigration laws. Court rulings have prevented the implementation of key provisions of the law, however, the Arizona controversy took enforcement of federal law a step further. Bruce noted, "One of the biggest legal challenges to the Arizona law is: Can a state pass immigration laws, or is the Federal government the exclusive body to regulate in the arena of immigration?"
