In an interview with Law360, Catharine Morisset discusses a bill in Washington State, H.B. 1570, that gives app-based drivers access to state paid family and medical leave through a pilot program starting in July 2024. Catharine explains that the bill represents a new approach to challenging independent contractor status. “The new law is consistent with a broader trend to narrow the differences between an independent contractor and a traditional employee as far as legal protections or legislated benefits." Catharine predicts Washington's approach may inspire other jurisdictions to take a similar one.
