Employers starting battling drugs in the workplace in the 80s and 90s, Just as both parties launched a “War on Drugs,” Federal and State governments created a whole new type of regulatory process, including the DOT regulations and numerous State laws. For the next 16 odd years, workplace unlawful drug use declined, and drug testing and drug and alcohol policies became routine and caused few problems. Employers wrestled with other challenges. Starting in 2014 and 2015, trends reversed and positive test results began to increase, and to the horror of those who lived in the 60s, opiate abuse has surged by double digits. In this session, we’ll discuss drug abuse trends, including abuse of prescription pain killers, issues posed by state legalization of medical and recreational marijuana use, how to respond to lawful but potentially hazardous drug use in the workplace, and the new OSHA regulations.
