Thinking About Automation? Don’t Forget to Consider Labor Laws Along the Way

Transit employers thinking about adopting autonomous vehicle technology need to consider the labor law ramifications of automation early in the decision-making process. In a bylined article for the APTA’s Passenger Transport, Michael Greco lays out some of the legal issues public transit employers will need to be aware of when deciding whether to automate their fleets. He notes that “[w]hen a public transit authority considers automation, a duty may arise to bargain with labor over the decision to automate and over the effects of the decision.” He goes on to explain what he means by this and what other labor law obligations might be triggered if automation is part of a transit employer’s future plans.
