States Reviewing Legislation That Could Boost Independent Contractor Pay Protections

State and local lawmakers are stepping in to propose stopgap measures for independent contractors as uncertainty lingers over national policies for classifying workers. Seth Kaufman spoke with Law360 on new legislation that is popping up across the country that might expand independent contractor pay protection laws. In the short term, state lawmakers may find it more politically feasible to pass pay protections for freelancers than to tackle the broader classification question. Seth says that stepping stone approach might suite employers better than tackling the entire independent contractor-employee question that could have big ramifications.
