S.B. 358 - California’s “Fair Pay Act”
The Equal Pay Act has existed since 1949. It prohibited employers from paying employees of one sex more than employees of the other sex in the same establishment for equal work on jobs requiring equal skill, effort and responsibility and performed under similar working conditions. Because of the difficult burden of proof, few Equal Pay Act lawsuits were filed resulting in California having a gender wage gap of 16%. The California legislature decided to fix this inequity by passing S.B. 358, California’s Fair Pay Act. This presentation will address how this new legislation affects all California employers.
