Steve Cupp and Jaklyn Wrigley presented “Preparing For And Winning Unemployment Compensation Claims: Practice Tips And Pitfalls To Avoid,” on May 7, 2014 at the Mississippi State SHRM Conference.
All too often employers are faced with a former employee’s application for unemployment benefits. In most cases, the unemployment hearings are handled by company human resource personnel rather than outside counsel. While sometimes it might be prudent to contest a former employee’s eligibility for benefits, other times it might be more efficient and economical not to challenge a former employee’s application. If the claim is challenged, the company will want to prepare for and put on the best evidence possible to win.
Seminar Topics:
- The eligibility requirements for unemployment benefits.
- The grounds on which you can contest the application.
- When it makes sense to contest the application.
- Best practices for preparing witnesses and presenting evidence.
- How to appeal an unfavorable application.
- Possible costs and consequences of challenging the application.
