Phoenix Business Journal: Tips For Handling Tattoos And Piercings In The Workplace
Publication
4.16.14
Shayna Balch offered the Phoenix Business Journal tips for handling tattoos and piercings in the workplace.
Tattoos and other forms of body art were once considered to be part of a counterculture. Prior to the 1980’s, tattoos and uncommon piercings were a rarity with an average of 1 out of every 100 people having a tattoo or other form of body art, Shayna explained. Today, approximately 1 in 10 Americans have a tattoo, and one-third of those age 25 to 30 have tattoos or some type of atypical piercing.
While society is becoming more liberated and expressive, and piercings and tattoos are now a part of everyday life, some employers are still finding it a challenge to manage body art in the workplace.
Shayna wrote that employers should draft their dress code policies in a manner that has a justifiable business rationale and does not discriminate against particular groups (i.e. gender, race, national origin, religion, and other protected categories).
