2015 was the busiest year in recent memory and 2016 promises more changes. This is NOT a lame duck Administration. Many of the changes involve OSHA expanding its requirements without rulemaking or new laws. No vertical OSHA standards apply to many actions, so in addition to issuing new Interpretations, OSHA seems serious about using its powers under Section 5(a)(1) of the OSHAct to cite employers for hazards “recognized by the industry.” Especially for ergonomics and workplace violence. OSHA’s new “weighted inspection” process rewards Compliance Officers for longer inspections, and focusing on general duty items such as ergonomics and workplace violence. OSHA National and Regional Emphasis programs are targeting distributors, healthcare, poultry processing and other industries for ergonomic issues. Other programs focus on workplace violence at hospitals. Combustible dust remains the most common and expensive 5(a)(1) citation. Join us to discuss important steps to take.
