Tom Birchfield was quoted in an article entitled “No Need For Businesses To Fear ‘Ban The Box’ Measure,” published on the Louisville Business First website.
According to the article, Louisville has become the latest city to enact an ordinance prohibiting employers from asking job applicants about their criminal backgrounds.
The measure prohibits asking job applicants about prior criminal convictions. It applies only to the city and its private vendors.
Four states, Minnesota, Hawaii, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, have extended the law to private businesses as well.
“Louisville businesses should not worry if that eventually happens here,” said Tom.
“I don’t think it is that big of a deal because it says you can’t have a box on the application,” he said.
‘Ban the Box’ supporters say the measure simply prevents businesses from summarily dismissing job applicants who admit they’ve been convicted of a crime.
