Maryland Becomes 13th State to Pass ‘Ban the Box’ Laws

Maryland has joined 13 other states plus the District of Columbia to bar employers from asking job applicants about their criminal history on the initial job application. Speaking with Bloomberg Law, Sherron McClain said: “this isn’t one of the most restrictive pieces of ‘ban the box’ legislation. But some city and state laws, including Baltimore’s ordinance, block private employers from asking criminal history questions up until they’ve made a conditional job offer to an applicant. Nevertheless, Maryland employers would need to train any employees involved in hiring to avoid criminal history questions until an in-person interview.”
