Columbus attorney Steve Loewengart provided words of caution in the Columbus Business First March 18 article “March Madness Office Pools – Do’s and Don’ts for Employers.” Steve’s primary piece of advice was for employers to relax unless they think employees spend too much time watching games on their computers instead of doing their work. If there’s a problem, Steve said, then the boss should remind employees about company policy as it pertains to using office computers and equipment for non-work related purposes. Steve’s do’s and don’t include: the employer should never be the sponsor of the office pool, and do not pressure anyone into participating. Steve advised employers to note the positives of office pools as well. “It can provide esprit de corps and a good feeling about the workplace if they are participating, it’s voluntary and it’s fun.”
