In an interview with Law360, Emily Litzinger provides tips for employing young workers over the summer without running afoul of DOL wage and hour laws. Emily explains that employers should monitor hours and can track hours electronically or use visual cues, which can be particularly helpful in fast-paced environments. "Oftentimes, people who are minors will wear different colored shirts or different colored hats," she said. "The supervisor in charge of managing the people can say 'oh, well, that person is past this time. That person is not supposed to be working past this time.'"
Emily also stresses the importance of training to make sure frontline supervisors and managers are properly enforcing wage and hour laws for young workers. And she recommends that the training be combined with an audit where the employer will assess workers’ hours and job duties to ensure they are in compliance.
