The Phoenix Business Journal published an article by Shayna Balch entitled “How March Madness Can Get You Fired.”

Since the dawn of time, sporting events and the fanfare that often surrounds them has been a constant distraction among those in the workforce, Shayna wrote.

With the addition of the Internet, social media and email communications, employees are able to take a sports holiday with the push of a button and squander away hours of work, Shayna explained. Several recent surveys have determined that employers stand to lose more than $100 million dollars in lost wages due to employees taking time off or time away from their daily duties to watch their favorite sports team.
