In an interview with Bloomberg Law, Hannah Sweiss weighs in on the trend of app-based employment sites that link hospitals and other healthcare facilities with healthcare workers. While the gig economy proliferates around ridesharing and food delivery, the heavily-regulated healthcare sector offers far more legal risks from misclassification, and joint-employer disputes, to wage and hour issues.
There hasn’t yet been a wave of litigation against app-based companies, and many of the marketplace systems don’t rely on independent contractor relationships. But a handful of pending misclassification lawsuits were filed last year in California state court, and labor experts in the article say more could follow if they gain traction in the industry.
Hannah says the gig model in the healthcare industry is risky and that the firm is watching this trend closely.
