Our Memphis colleague, Greg Grisham, recently published a guest column in the Memphis Business Journal entitled: “Independent Contractors Now Eligible For Unemployment Compensation.” As a result of the Coronavirus Aid Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act signed into law on March 27, “independent contractors will be able to recover unemployment benefits through the end of the year,” Grisham writes. “The Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program expands coverage under state unemployment compensation systems to individuals not eligible for regular compensation or extended benefits under state or federal law or pandemic emergency unemployment compensation, which includes, but is not limited to, independent contractors.” His article details the eligibility criteria for UI benefits and discusses the impact this development could have on the gig economy, which Greg also discussed in some detail on our blog recently. Go check it out.
