Excavations and trenches have become so commonplace on work sites that some employers and employees have developed a sense of complacency with some of the most basic requirements of excavation safety. To counter this, OSHA initiated a National Emphasis Program on trenching and excavation to increase its education and enforcement efforts regarding these operations. In a contributed article for Occupational Health & Safety, Christopher Peterson outlines the program and how it aims to prevent cave-ins, protect workers, stop water from accumulating, test hazardous atmospheres, and improve site inspections.
