Japan has implemented new measures to allow foreign nationals with short-stay visas to obtain part-time work. It is estimated that approximately 21,000 individuals are eligible.
As of December 1, 2020, foreign nationals with 90-day short-stay visas can renew their permits and receive permission to work up to 28 hours per week. Additionally, technical trainees will be able to change their visas to a “specified activity” work permit for six months. Those with student visas will also be able to work up to 28 hours per week even if they are no longer students.
The Japanese government adopted the above measures to assist foreigners who are staying in Japan longer than planned due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Employers in Japan should note that these measures are temporary and that their duration is unknown at this time.
