COVID-19 Class Action Lawsuits Against Universities Gaining Steam

A recent count by The State University of New York’s Student Conduct Institute shows that more than 100 lawsuits have been filed against colleges for the return of tuition and other fees because of COVID-19. In an interview with Education Dive, Michael Holt explains the threshold for whether these cases can get class action status. In the absence of a written contract, he says, the important question is which documents lay out what students can expect for their money. "In a lot of cases, the evidence of that is going to involve things like course catalogs, or whatever the overall guiding document is that lays out what students have to do in order to get a particular degree."
