In a bylined article published in Sports Litigation Alert, Josh Nadreau assesses the minor leaguer’s union status and what it will mean going forward. Josh explains that Major League Baseball (MLB) has voluntarily recognized the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) as the minor leaguers’ exclusive bargaining representative, which means that interactions are now governed by federal labor law. “Put simply—the owners cannot make unilateral changes to player pay, work rules, or even playing rules - all of these items need to be negotiated with the union first,” said Josh. He goes on to describe what types of items are being negotiated as the players’ representatives meet with the owners to finalize a collective bargaining agreement.
