Last week the National Institute of Standards and Technology ("NIST")--a part of the U.S. Department of Commerce, issued a Cybersecurity Practice Guide for mobile devices used in healthcare. The NIST guide, entitled "Securing Electronic Health Records on Mobile Devices" highlights the issues confronting healthcare entities whose providers and employees frequently use mobile devices to view electronic health records. The guide piggybacks on compliance standards many healthcare entities are adopting for mobile use of healthcare information or "bring your own device" policies they implement. Although written for healthcare entities, the guide has strong application on the use of BYOD and mobile devices outside of healthcare as well. You can view a copy of it on NIST.
