The Higher Education Practice Group of Fisher Phillips offers half-day and day-long customized training programs on Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. These on-site training sessions are geared exclusively to higher education institutions and can be customized to a school’s particular needs and interests. Among the topics typically covered are:

  • An overview of disability laws governing employees and students with disabilities
  • Recurring and complicated issues for students and employees with mental health conditions
  • Institutional obligations regarding accommodations including a discussion of common issues and court decisions
  • Special issues for employees and students on the autism spectrum
  • Effectively managing performance and behavioral issues for employees and students with disabilities, including discussion of boundary setting in challenging cases
  • Consideration of assistive technology and physical space modifications;
  • Best practices for policy development and compliance

The sessions are led by higher education legal professionals Scott Schneider and Josh Zugish.

Scott Schneider heads Fisher Phillips Higher Education Practice Group and is a nationally recognized professional on higher education legal issues. He has litigated on behalf of education institutions around the country. He also provides expert witness testimony on behalf of higher education institutions and designs and delivers training programs on a host of education issues, including Title IX compliance obligations; legal issues in faculty hiring, promotion, and tenure revocation; and managing risk in student affairs.

Scott is also an award-winning professor at Tulane University where he teaches courses in both the law and business schools on, among other things, Higher Education Law and Labor and Employment Law. Scott’s experience with education law issues is informed by a real world understanding of how colleges and universities operate as he worked in the Office of General Counsel for Tulane University. Scott is a frequently requested and nationally recognized consultant, presenter, and trainer who speaks on issues related to education law and has provided training or delivered presentations for the National Association of College and University Attorneys, the National Association of Independent Schools, the Association of Student Conduct Administrators’ Gehring Institute, the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement, and Educause.

Joshua Zugish is a Special Assistant Attorney General and Senior Associate Legal Counsel with the Colorado State University System, providing counsel on all manner of student affairs law, policy and regulatory compliance, litigation and risk management. Josh provides frequent trainings and professional development presentations on legal issues impacting higher education institutions. Josh has served on the program development committee with the National Association of College and University Attorneys, in addition to presenting for a variety of higher education conferences, companies and organizations. Josh also teaches the Law of Higher Education for Master’s and Ph.D. programs at the University of Northern Colorado and Colorado State University.
